Liver & Gastrointestinal Diseases

Liver and gastrointestinal diseases can affect digestion, metabolism, nutrient absorption, immunity, and overall health. Laboratory testing plays an important role in evaluating liver injury, infections, chronic liver disease, gastrointestinal inflammation, malabsorption, and other digestive disorders.

At National Path Lab (NPL), a range of biochemical, serological, hematological, molecular, and specialized investigations can support screening, diagnosis, disease assessment, and treatment monitoring.

•  Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Why Are Multiple Tests Sometimes Needed?

Liver and gastrointestinal diseases can have overlapping symptoms and laboratory findings. A combination of tests may therefore be required — for example, fatty liver evaluation combines liver enzymes with metabolic testing and viral hepatitis screening, while hepatitis B evaluation combines multiple serological markers with HBV DNA and liver enzymes.

Your doctor may select the appropriate combination based on symptoms, medical history, medications, previous reports, and suspected diagnosis.

Do Liver & Gastrointestinal Tests Require Fasting?

Preparation depends on the individual test. Liver function tests usually do not require fasting, although fasting may be requested when performed as part of a broader metabolic panel. Hepatitis serology and HBV DNA/HCV RNA testing usually do not require fasting. Lipid profile fasting may be recommended in selected circumstances. Glucose/HbA1c requirements differ — HbA1c generally does not require fasting. Celiac antibody testing usually does not require fasting. Always follow the specific preparation instructions provided by your doctor or NPL.
