Infectious Disease Risk
Infectious disease risk refers to the likelihood of exposure to and infection with disease-causing organisms, based on lifestyle, occupation, travel, and immune status. Some infections — particularly HIV and hepatitis B/C — can remain silent for years while causing progressive damage, making risk-based screening essential rather than optional.
Unlike many other health risks on this page, infectious disease risk is often time-sensitive: identifying and treating an infection early can prevent both personal complications and further transmission to others.
At National Path Lab (NPL), confidential testing is available for a wide range of infectious disease risks, from sexually transmitted infections to travel-related illnesses.

About Infectious Disease Risk
Who Is at Risk?
Infectious disease risk depends heavily on exposure circumstances:
Non-Modifiable Factors | Modifiable Factors |
|---|---|
Occupational exposure (healthcare workers and similar roles) | Unprotected sexual contact or multiple partners |
Immunocompromised status due to an underlying medical condition | Sharing needles or injection equipment |
Geographic residence in or travel to areas with higher disease prevalence | Incomplete vaccination status |
Lack of protective measures during travel to endemic areas | |
Close, prolonged contact with an infected individual without appropriate precautions |
Related Tests Available at NPL
Test | Clinical Relevance |
HIV Antigen/Antibody Test | The standard screening test for HIV. |
Hepatitis B Panel (HBsAg, Anti-HBs, Anti-HBc) | Assesses hepatitis B infection and immunity status. |
Hepatitis C Antibody (Anti-HCV) | Screens for hepatitis C exposure. |
STI Panel (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis) | Screens for common sexually transmitted infections. |
Tuberculosis Testing | Relevant for occupational or close-contact exposure. |
Malaria / Dengue Testing | Relevant for travel to endemic areas with fever. |
